January 1941. Europe is on fire. Olivier Messiaen is a prisoner of war. He was held with other Frenchmen in Stalag VIII A, in eastern Germany. Fortunately, some of his fellow students could play music: Etienne Pasquier had a cello, Henri Akoka a clarinet and Jean Le Boulaire a violin, while Messiaen himself had access to a piano. The composer wrote for this heterogeneous quartet a vast fresco in eight movements. Inspired by the Apocalypse of Saint John, the work is not, however, full of darkness. On the contrary, streaked with bird songs, it multiplies the colorful flights towards the beyond.
Rightly considered one of the summits of twentieth-century chamber music, the Quartet for the End of Time is a perfect starting point for the first steps of a new ensemble, Carton Jaune, from the 2021 edition of the Ulysses program. These four musicians based in four different European cities add to their program a Jia Yi Lee creation. As the young Singaporean composer confessed a passion for the color of sounds, one of Messiaen’s great preoccupations during the winter of 1941, their dialogue beyond the end of time can only be stimulating.

Carton Jaune
Carton Jaune is an ensemble of musicians passionate about contemporary music and creation, which was founded by members of the ensemble Ulysses 2021. Four musicians based in four different cities in Europe, Carton Jaune is an ensemble that aims to give voice to the music of today.
