Domenico Scarlatti never ceases to inspire today’s artists. This composer was born more than three centuries ago, the same year as Bach and Handel. But the 555 Sonatas for Harpsichord he wrote while in the service of the Queen of Spain remain a pinnacle of keyboard writing that the great harpsichordists all try to climb at some point. The fact that the vast majority of these sonatas are posthumous fires the imagination. The novelist Hélène Gestern has just written a book about a possible five hundred and sixth sonata. The attentive reader of the rare editions of the Sonatas in the François Lang Music LibraryColin Roche – Grand prix Sacem de la musique symphonique, young composer category, in 2018 – imagines new ones, which would be, like him, attached to silence, to its thickness, to its depth, to the intimate movements it shelters. The pianist Violaine Debever plays some of them, which she confronts with Scarlatti’s technical discoveries, with his harmonic language that is as rich as it is original, and, in short, with his great contemporaneity.
